Compensation for Families Who Lost Loved Ones Who Lived or Worked in Lower Manhattan on or After 9/11

$10+ billion in compensation is available to family members who lost a loved one to cancer since 9/11. The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund is open to claims for families who had a loved one who lived, worked, went to school, was in adult day care, or was a responder in lower Manhattan between 9/11 and May 30, 2002, and since died of any type of cancer. The tax-free awards to these surviving family members range from $250,000 to $3.5 million. In most cases, it is not too late for a family to file a VCF claim for the loss of a loved one, even 20 years later.

Almost 3,000 lives were lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, and the survivors and families of 9/11 victims have faced immense tragedy and loss. The “second wave” of lives lost to 9/11-caused cancer or other illnesses continues to this day. To date, more lives have been lost than on the day of the initial attacks. We have met all too many 9/11 families who have lost mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, sons and daughters. In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, the Victim Compensation Fund was established to protect and support the families of those who lost their lives.

Protecting the Families of 9/11 Victims

If you lost a loved one on September 11, 2001 – either in the attacks or in the past 20 years – and your family member got cancer or a breathing condition after they lived, worked, or went to school in lower Manhattan between 9/11 and May 30, 2002, your family is likely eligible for compensation.

VCF awards range from $250,000 to $3.5 million. For example, just recently we secured an award in the amount of $1.3 million for a family of a deceased Tully Construction concrete worker who was at Ground Zero.

Types of Support Available to Family Members

Families who have lost loved ones are often eligible for a number of payouts through the 9/11 VCF. These include both economic and non-economic (pain and suffering) losses and wrongful death payouts, in addition to payments that cover funeral expenses and other costs. Our 9/11 lawyers at Hansen & Rosasco, LLP can help you get the maximum VCF payout that is due to you and your family.

How Compensation is Determined for A Victim's Family

When determining compensation for a victim's family, the VCF considers the victim's age, occupation, and financial contributions to the family. They also take into account any physical or mental injuries suffered by the family due to the attacks. The amount of compensation awarded depends on the individual circumstances of each case.

How Our 9/11 Lawyers Can Help Your Family

Our 9/11 lawyers recently won $1.3 million in Zadroga Act payouts for the family of a deceased construction worker who became sick after having worked at Ground Zero. We have also secured many other million-dollar awards for families who lost loved ones. These included, for example, a Downtown Manhattan insurance administrative worker who suffered and passed away from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD).

Losing a loved one on account of a 9/11 cancer or other illness is especially tragic. These were needless losses among selfless first responders, workers, residents, and others who returned to Lower Manhattan after the EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman promised (falsely) that the air was safe. We are proud to represent the 9/11 community because we know each and every person’s family has the absolute right to compensation.
