Will Zadroga 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Eventually Cover Cancer?
Great article in yesterday’s Newsday regarding the possible scientific connections between WTC Ground Zero toxic exposure and various cancers among first responders. It followed the sad death of NYC Fire Marshal Steven Mosiello (above), who died of presumed WTC related esophageal cancer this past week.
As of now, Victim Compensation Fund Special Master Sheila Birnbaum has made it clear that no cancers are currently compensable under the new Zadroga Act draft regulations. However, she has left the door open to the possibility that certain cancers will be covered depending on the outcome of pending scientific studies. In particular, one study analyzing the cancers found among 16,000 thousand NYC Firemen done by Dr. David Prezant, Chief FDNY Medical Officer, could hold the key to Zadroga cancer victims receiving compensation.
We will have to wait and see the study’s final conclusions which are due before the end of this year.Posted under: First Responders, Illnesses Covered
