What is the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund?

While the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001, are 17 years behind us, the damage continues to ripple through the lives of first responders and innocent bystanders who found themselves in the vicinity of the World Trade Center (WTC) on that day – as well as the weeks and months thereafter. This led the federal government to establish the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF).

What is the Victim Compensation Fund?

The WTC VCF was conceived to provide individuals who were physically harmed during the 9/11 terror attacks or developed diseases years later (IE: cancer) with monetary compensation and lifetime medical care for qualifying ailments. Additionally, family members of victims who lost their lives may also file a claim on their behalf.

Who is Eligible

You are eligible to file a claim if you were in the vicinity of the 9/11 crash site area – even for a short period of time – between September 11, 2001, and May 30, 2002, and if you’ve developed a covered illness such as cancer, breathing problems, or digestive issues. (See map below.)

Why You Need to Act Now

It has become clear to the federal government that the VCF is running out of money. That’s why beginning February 1, 2019, the criteria for eligibility is changing and awards may be significantly less. This change means the list of covered illnesses may become shorter and payouts to victims could be smaller. Don’t wait. Act now by filing your claim well in advance.
