Surprisingly, with little fanfare, President Obama signed the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act into law this afternoon while still on vacation in Hawaii.
Although the tenacious supporters of this bill deserved better, perhaps the President thought that a low-key ceremony was more appropriate given the somber purpose of the new law. Regardless, the important fact is that 9/11 survivors, first responders and other workers will now get the medical care and compensation they so desperately need.
Now, the “Special Master” of the re-opened Victims’ Compensation Fund has 180 days to issue new regulations to implement the Zadroga Act. This is where the details of claims’ procedures and other matters will be “put on the bones” of what was an otherwise short bill by Washington standards.
We will post further details on the new Zadroga Act regulations as they become available. See the FealGood Foundation Press Release on the signing here. For now, let us all be grateful that this day has finally come.
