Sick 9/11 First Responders Plead with Congress to Extend Zadroga Health and Compensation Act So that Future Cancers are Covered

In a recent CBS interview, retired NYPD officer David Hawley spoke about the fate of cancer-stricken 9/11 first responders if the bill isn’t extended. He has had his own battle with a rare throat cancer that was a direct result of being exposed to Ground Zero toxins and debris. Hawley told CBS, “People are going to die, the men and women that are sick that are being taken care of now. I’ve only been cancer-free a little over a year.” He adds, “To end this program, people are going to die.” I think Officer Hawley says it simply but powerfully. Congress MUST listen!

WTC Health Program Successful in Treating Kidney Cancer Case

After having several catscans and visiting a number of doctors, he was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. It was the doctors at the World Trade Center Health Program that assured him that he would receive the care that he needed. Through minimally invasive robotic surgery, Rachko’s tumor was removed, as well as part of his left kidney. Thanks to the WTC Health Program and his surgeon, Ketan Badani, a new technique was used during his operation, which prevented damage to the healthy parts of his kidney.

Advocates to Hold Press Conference to Extend the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act

Even after 13 years, many are just now being diagnosed 9/11 related illnesses. The most concerning is the amount of cancer cases that have been surfacing among responders and survivors recently. Many will still need care for their 9/11 related illnesses way after the program expires. For example, many 9/11 cancers may not be diagnosed until after 2016. This is just one of the reasons why it needs to continue. First Responders and survivors should be able to have monitoring and care of their 9/11 related cancer and other illnesses throughout their lifetime.
