9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Filing Deadlines: What You Need to Know

On September 15, 2016, the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) extended deadlines to file claims for compensation. The new VCF deadlines substantially benefit many victims who were previously told that they had missed filing or registration deadlines.

Anyone who was previously told by any source that they missed a filing deadline should call our office today at 1-855-WTC-INFO (1- 800-887-7299) to see if they can now file under the new deadlines.

Big Win for 9/11 Firefighter Widow Fighting for WTC Death Benefit Pension

In a strongly worded opinion slamming the New York City Fire Department Pension Board, New York Supreme Court Justice Richard Velasquez found that the Pension Board acted in “bad faith” and will be “sanctioned” for denying death benefits to the widow of a hero 9/11 firefighter. Bottom Line – the New York Fire Department Pension Board was appropriately “taken to the woodshed”. Let it be a lesson to all New York Pension Board’s in the future treat 9/11 heroes fairly.

Zadroga Act September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Releases Final Compensation Claim Forms, 12/ 5/ 2011

Yesterday, September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) Special Master Sheila Birnbaum released the final forms necessary for any claimant to fully file a Zadroga Act Victim Compensation Fund Claim. The official form for claimants and/or their attorneys to file for “compensation” from the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund can be downloaded here for your use.

Whether or not you are currently represented by counsel, any eligible claimant can officially file 9/11 VCF claims as of today. Please make sure to review the “9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Document Checklist” before filing, which can be downloaded here also.

New Zadroga 9/11 Act Victim Compensation Fund FAQ’s from Justice Department

On January 2, 2011, President Obama signed the Zadroga Act, which reopens the September 11th Victim Compensation Fundof 2001. The Zadroga Act expanded the scope of the original VCF to enable more individuals who suffered physical injury or death as a result of the September 11th attacks to obtain compensation from the program. The VCF will accept claims for five years and will complete the payment of claims during 2016-17. you must submit your claim within two years of the date you know of the physical injury or death resulting from the attacks (or, if you already know of the physical injury or death in question, within two years of the date that the regulations are finally updated).
Congress has appropriated a fixed sum of money for the VCF. This fixed sum is $2.775 billion. Congress has also determined that $875 million of that total amount may be paid out in the first five years of the VCF program. The remainder may be paid in the sixth year.
