Interstitial Lung Disease 9/11 Cases

Lung and Breathing Conditions in 9/11 Victims

The misery of interstitial lung disease, breathing problems, and different types of lung conditions caused by 9/11 continue to have an immense impact on individuals living with these conditions.

The 9/11 victims’ lawyers at Hansen & Rosasco, LLP have heard many cases, specifically about how Ground Zero asbestos exposure has led to interstitial lung disease in first responders, area residents, and Downtown Manhattan workers. If you are suffering from a 9/11-related illness, we are here to help you get compensation.

Our 9/11 victims’ lawyers secured $1.1 million for a NYC sanitation worker disabled by 9/11 interstitial lung disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD).

Interstitial Lung Disease Conditions

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a broad collection of over 200 chronic lung disorders, which include sarcoidosischronic asthma, chronic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, reactive airway disease syndrome (RADS) and pulmonary fibrosis.

Hansen & Rosasco, LLP represents many clients with interstitial lung disease, and we have helped them obtain lifelong medical care through the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) and cash compensation from the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF).

When a person suffers from ILD, the tissue between the air sacs of the lungs (called the interstitium) is affected by the inflammation or scarring (fibrosis). The scarring or fibrosis causes a person’s lung tissue to lose the ability to breathe fully and, as a result, carry oxygen to the body. ILD is a chronic/long-term condition that is generally non-malignant (or not cancerous). Once scarring of the lungs occurs, it is generally irreversible. Medications may slow the damage of interstitial lung disease, but many people never regain full use of their lungs. Lung transplant is an option for some people who have this condition.

Research in Interstitial Lung Disease

Research studies accepted by the federal government show that ILD is caused by inhaling environmental pollutants, exposure to asbestos fibers, and silica dust. All of these substances have been documented as having been part of the toxic dust and fumes that blanketed all of lower Manhattan for many months after the 9/11 attacks.

Symptoms of Interstitial Lung Disease

Common symptoms of ILD/pulmonary fibrosis are similar to various other 9/11-related breathing conditions, such as COPD. These symptoms include shortness of breath (especially with exercise or other strenuous activity), a dry cough without mucus/phlegm (similar to “World Trade Center Cough”), and difficulty or labored breathing.

Like many other 9/11-related breathing disorders, ILD/pulmonary fibrosis is gradually progressive. If you believe you are developing early symptoms of any of these conditions due to your time at Ground Zero, we recommend that you seek treatment and contact our office to start your claim immediately.

This is an amazing firm. They are always courteous and helpful. They fought to make sure that I received the most I could with my cancer diagnosis. Knowing that my family is set up in the future is really a weight lifted off my shoulders.” -Robert Thomas S.
