Colon Cancer (Colorectal Cancer)

9/11 Colon Cancer Compensation Claims

The toxic cloud of dust and debris created by the 9/11 attacks is a proven cause of colon and rectal cancer in responders and also individuals who lived, worked, or went to school in lower Manhattan between 9/11 and May 30, 2002. As a result, responders, downtown workers, residents, and students are often eligible to file a claim for compensation from the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.

The Link Between 9/11 and Colon Cancer

The collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) created enormous clouds of dust, smoke, and fumes that lingered in the air for months. Thousands of first responders, downtown office workers, students, and residents were exposed to the toxins. Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, originates as a growth on the inner lining of the large intestines, and environmental exposure is one of the known risk factors. Colon cancer has been observed at higher rates among first responders and anyone else present in the general population in downtown NYC on or at any time during the many months after the attacks. According to the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP), colon or rectal cancer is one of the top 10 most common cancers affecting the downtown NYC 8/11 population. These findings underscore the importance of ongoing medical screenings for those who were exposed to the aftermath of 9/11.

Understanding Colon Cancer Symptoms

Recognizing the symptoms of colon cancer is crucial for early detection and treatment. Common signs include changes in bowel movements, blood in the stool, ongoing abdominal discomfort, and unexplained weight loss. As the disease often does not show symptoms right away, regular colon cancer screenings are recommended for first responders and survivors who were exposed to 9/11 toxins.

How to Know if You Qualify For 9/11 Colon Cancer Compensation

Eligibility for compensation from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) for colon or rectal cancer depends on several factors. These include:

  • Registering and filing a claim with the 9/11 VCF by the applicable deadlines;
  • Registering with the WTCHP to have the 9/11-related health condition certified; Providing proof of presence in the Exposure Zone between September 11, 2001 and May 30, 2002, along the routes of debris removal, or at one of the other crash sites, including the Pentagon site or the Shanksville, Pennsylvania site; and
  • Meeting the balance of the regulations that govern the WTCHP and 98/11 VCF.

WTC Health Program Treatment Options for Colon Cancer

The WTC Health Program offers a range of medical monitoring and treatment options for those diagnosed with 9/11 colon cancer. This includes advanced medical treatments like chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, ablation, surgery, and radiation therapy, as well as regular screenings and monitoring.

The WTCHP offers three types of colon cancer screening. Colon cancer screening looks for cancer before symptoms of the disease appear, allowing for earlier diagnosis and treatment. Given the long latency period of colon cancer, the WTCHP recommends survivors and responders register with the WTCHP for colon cancer screenings even if they are in good health.

VCF Cancer Payouts for 9/11 Colon Cancer Patients

For individuals diagnosed with colon cancer as a result of the 9/11 attacks, the VCF provides financial compensation to cover medical expenses, lost income and benefits, and other costs associated with 9/11-related health conditions. VCF cancer payouts may also cover non-economic losses, such as physical and emotional pain, suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life. The amount and type of compensation vary based on individual circumstances and the impact of the disease on the victim’s life, highlighting the importance of thorough documentation in the claims filing process.
