Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

9/11 Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Compensation Claims

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is often diagnosed in people who were exposed to the 9/11 toxins because they lived, worked, or went to school in lower Manhattan anytime between 9/11 and May 30, 2002. If you or a loved one were in lower Manhattan on or after 9/11 and have since been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, you may be eligible for a substantial tax-free award from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.

WHY YOU NEED AN EXPERIENCED 9/11 ATTORNEY

Exposure to 9/11 Toxins and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma

The collapse of the World Trade Center buildings released a cloud of toxic dust, debris, and chemicals that, for almost a full year, exposed hundreds of thousands of downtown Manhattan workers, residents, students, and others to known carcinogens. Research has shown a link between this exposure and an elevated risk of developing several types of 9/11-certified cancers, including Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. This connection has been recognized by the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP), which includes Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma among its list of 9/11-related health conditions.

Common Symptoms of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a type of cancer that begins in your lymphatic system, a part of the body's immune system. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can present with a wide range of symptoms, depending on the type and the location in the body. The most common sign is enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin. Other symptoms may include unexplained weight loss, fever, night sweats, fatigue, chills, swollen abdomen, chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath or cough, severe or frequent infections, and easy bruising or bleeding. Due to the nonspecific nature of these symptoms, 9/11 responders and survivors need to be proactive and seek medical monitoring for any persistent or unexplained health changes.

How to Know if You Qualify For Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Compensation From 9/11 Exposure

The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) provides financial compensation to individuals who suffered from health conditions or were killed as a result of their exposure to the aftermath of the attacks. To qualify for compensation for losses related to 9/11 Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, individuals must register and file a claim before the appropriate deadlines and meet the eligibility requirements outlined under the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act (Zadroga Act). While the VCS has strict deadlines, in most cases it is not too late to file a claim to receive compensation, even if you were diagnosed many years ago (or lost a loved one many years ago).

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Treatment Options Through the WTC Health Program

Also part of the Zadroga Act, the WTCHP was created to address the specific health challenges that 9/11 survivors and responders face. There are multiple World Trade Center Health Program Clinical Centers of Excellence (CCE) throughout the New York area, and a Nationwide Provider Network to provide care for members outside the area. These clinics offer a range of medical services that are essential for both the early detection and effective treatment of 9/11-related conditions including Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Advances in the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma have helped improve the prognosis for people with this disease. Treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted drug therapy, plasmapheresis, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy, antibiotic therapy, surgery, and bone marrow transplant. Often, multiple therapies are used in combination. Vaccine therapy is a new type of treatment currently being tested in trials. Treatment is determined based on the patient’s unique situation, including the subtype of your non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Support for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Patients

For those diagnosed with 9/11-related Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a range of support resources is available. In addition to the medical treatment and monitoring offered through the WTC Health Program and the financial compensation provided by the VCF, patients can access support groups, counseling services, and financial assistance programs designed to ease the burden of cancer treatment and care. Engaging with these resources can provide invaluable support and community for patients and their families during this challenging time. These include the following:

  • Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: Offers patient financial assistance and support groups for people affected by blood cancers to talk with other people affected by blood cancers, including patients, family members, and caregivers.
  • American Cancer Society: Offers programs and services to assist patients during and after cancer treatment. This includes a 24/7 cancer helpline, lodging during treatment, help connecting patients with resources, transportation to treatment, and a vast network of cancer survivors to connect with.
  • Cancer Support Community: Provides a cancer support helpline staffed by community navigators and resource specialists who provide guidance, resources, and support to cancer patients or their loved ones with a variety of needs — from getting cancer information, identifying support groups in your area, or finding someone to talk to.
  • CancerCare: Provides emotional and practical support for people affected by non-Hodgkin lymphoma, with specialized programs for caregivers, loved ones, children, and the bereaved.

For those dealing with the effects of 9/11-related health conditions such as Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, understanding the available resources and seeking the right support can make a significant difference in managing your health.
