Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal Cancer in 9/11 Victims

Esophageal cancer (also called “esophagus cancer”) is, sadly, a very common cancer in 9/11 first responders and survivors who lived or worked in Downtown Manhattan on 9/11 or at any time during the nine months after the terrorist attacks. As difficult as it may be, think of how much toxic dust these 9/11 first responders and survivors inhaled or even swallowed during that time period.

This dust, along with other harmful toxins in the air, traveled through each person’s esophagus to their stomach. Our Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) lawyers atHansen & Rosasco, LLP have represented a number of first responders, residents, and area workers who have received 9/11 cancer compensation for esophageal cancer. Our 9/11 lawyers have helped many people secure free lifetime healthcare and compensation.

Our firm won $768,000 for a NYC Transit Authority mason with cancer of the esophagus and cancer of the colon.

Esophageal Cancer Conditions

The esophagus is a hollow, muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Food and liquids that are swallowed travel through the inside of the esophagus to reach the stomach. T

his condition has turned out to be an all too common cancer among 9/11 first responders and Downtown Manhattan residents and area workers because of the higher exposure many had to the contaminated air at Ground Zero. There are two main types of esophageal cancer:

1) Squamous cell carcinoma
2) Adenocarcinoma

Esophageal Cancer Treatment Options

Depending on the “stage” of where the esophageal cancer is among survivors, 9/11 cancer compensation and treatment options may vary. The main options for treatment are:

  • Surgery
  • Radiation
  • Chemotherapy
  • Targeted therapy, including trastuzumab (Herceptin)
  • Endoscopic treatments
  • Palliative treatment to relieve symptoms, such as pain and trouble swallowing

They handled my mother’s claim and did a fantastic job. They were the middle man to the government and we were ecstatic when my mother received the most pain and suffering for her cancer.” -Rebecca F.
